Explore Puglia & Southern Italy on a Rail Discoveries Holiday - 4K
This is more of a travel video than rail video. My wife doesn't share my passion for trains, but she does like to holiday in coastal locations where warm weather is virtually guaranteed. Whilst eating lunch and watching UA-cam on TV, Alex Polizzi (the Hotel Inspector) cropped up presenting a program about Puglia and Southern Italy, my wife said “I'd like to go there”. I went back to work, turned on my computer and an advert by Rail Discoveries appeared promoting one of their holidays to Puglia, I clicked on the advert and liked what was on offer, the price seemed reasonable for an all inclusive holiday and I already knew it was somewhere my wife wanted to visit so I went ahead and booked it.
In this video we take a look at the highlights of the tour, although the holiday was promoted by a company known for rail holidays, we travelled to Italy by air with a mix of coach and train travel between our hotel and the towns and villages featured in this tour.
On our first full day in Italy we visited the pretty hill top villages of Locorotondo and Martina Franca in the morning, returning to our hotel for lunch, in the afternoon we visited the popular seaside town of Polignano a Mare built right up to the cliff edges and the cliffs themselves are perforated with large caves, some dry, others at sea level.
On Day Two we caught a train to Lecce, an impressive city where the art of the stone mason can really be appreciated. There are many baroque churches within the city featuring spectacular interiors, notably the Basilica of the Holy Cross, The Duomo (Cathedral), The Castle of Charles V and the Roman Amphitheatre. After a guided tour and free time to visit the shops and cafes we returned to the station to make our way back to our hotel.
Day Three - A free day to enjoy the hotel facilities or visit the local towns/villages.
Day Four - We travel by train to Bari, a port town with a rich and fascinating history, it's the second most important city of Southern Italy after Naples. We start with a guided tour of the town after which we had free time to explore the shops and cafes before returning to the station to make our way back to our hotel.
Day Five - One of the main highlights of the holiday was a visit to Matera with a population of around 60,000, it is the capital of the province of Matera in the region of Basilicata. The city gained international fame for its ancient town, the Sassi de Matera “Stones of Matera” becoming a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993. The town is famous for its cave dwellings, these originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are believed to be some of the earliest human habitats in Italy. A “Sassi” is a house dug into the rock on the side of the ravine.
Day Six - Another of the main highlights of the holiday was a visit to Alberobello. Our coach takes us into the Valle d’Itria, an area known for trulli houses. The town has a population of around 11,000 and since 1996 has been a UNESCO world heritage site due to its proliferation of trulli. Trulli (singular: trullo) are small round buildings of drystone construction with a conical roof, they are peculiar to the Valle d’Itria in Puglia and were originally used as field shelters, storehouses or accommodation for agricultural workers. Trulli are designed to be constructed and dismantled quickly, hence why they are built without mortar, they were designed to exploit a tax loophole because they were classed as temporary buildings and as such did not qualify for property tax. Alberobello did not gain “town” status until 1797 because up to that that point the occupants lived in homes classed as temporary structures. Many trulli have a carved sandstone pinnacle on top of the roof which is thought to be the signature of the stone mason responsible for its construction. Some trulli have whitewashed religious symbols of good luck painted on their roofs.

Hello Bob, Italy is a wonderful country with a diverse and surprising landscape. Being a long thin country it is well suited to high-speed rail. I have booked one of my next three trips and I'll book the other two if I survive next month’s trip to South Africa on a tour that is likely to push me to the limits of both my stamina and filming abilities. I intend to visit New Zealand and Australia again next year, the date will depend on whether or not the railways I intend to visit have completed all the necessary maintenance work required to allow trains to run over their full lengths. Take care 🍺🍻 Tim.

With all its pollution problems one has to wonder about the metal health of the morons who closed London's tram system and underground mail rail. London with all its political correctness and mainly foreign born population is an embarrassment to the rest of the country. The English language, Cockneys, Rhyming Slang, Pearly Kings and Queens, along with British History have all been consigned to the scrap heap in the name of Woke. It's warm wet and windy here on the UK's South Coast today.

Prague is built on the banks of the Vltava River, being in the centre of Europe the city has been affected and influence by a number of invaders almost since the start of time. It was a nice trip showing many aspects of the city, it's certainly a nice place to visit.

Witaj, Tim. Na ulicach nie ma ludzi. Na ulicach są pojazdy. Ludzie wysiadają z pojazdów albo wsiadają do pojazdów.

My wife describes New Zealand as being like Wales on stilts. The New Zealand tourist industry has benefited enormously from being the location for Lord of the Rings. The scenery in North Wales is very similar to the scenery in New Zealand.

Too bad the sound isn't original. The T3 Coupe is a T3R.P type tram with IGBT armament. The sound in the video resembles the TV8 armament with GTO thyristors.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1 10 днів тому

I was hoping to get away with the sound swap, the all-female crew driving and looking after our tour group on this trip talked a lot and I might have caused them embarrassment if I'd broadcast their otherwise private conversations to the world. I've replaced speech with music in the past and that went down like a lead balloon. I searched through my videos to find a suitable video to extract a soundtrack from. This was the donor video - ua-cam.com/video/Z6WaQYbf1wk/v-deo.html I hope you can forgive me for the fake soundtrack.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Okay, I understand your decision. But it's a shame, Prague Transport Company strictly prohibits similar video recordings from drivers here. They pointlessly refer to the GDPR, but in other CZ cities it is no problem. If you have the original footage somewhere, I'd appreciate it.

@@daktrok1Hi, this is a video taken from the same tram 4 years earlier with the original soundtrack ua-cam.com/video/w1rpmoQtxfY/v-deo.html Sadly the camera was close to a windscreen demisting vent and that is really all you can hear. Prague has an excellent tram network, it would be nice if the tram operating company worked with one of their drivers or managers to produce a series of videos covering the whole network, I'm sure such videos would be very popular. I did edit this latest video with the original soundtrack, I sent it to a friend in Prague to listen to and he advised me not to release it with the original soundtrack because it would cause embarrassment. If I return I'll mount the camera on the outside of the windscreen, clear of the wipers if I can obtain permission to do so.

I had to check if this comment was a sci-fi buzzword salad reference I didn't get or if you were really talking trams. I gotta say that this phrase "The T3 Coupe is a T3R.P type with IGBT armament. That one sounds like a TV8 with GTO thyristors." sounds like something Han would say to Chewy while they are sneaking around avoiding stormtroopers. Love the video thnx

As a Serbian, it's sad to see that my country is lazy to restore more steam trains for mkre tourist attractions

Serbia is a beautiful country that was once home to an extensive network of narrow gauge railways, as a tourist I'd visit more often if there were more heritage type railways to visit. The Welsh tourist industry benefits enormously from the presents of a healthy heritage railway scene, I see no reason why a country like Serbia cannot attract tourists in the same way.

@@Fchops11 Hi Flynn, it's nice to spend time with your Grandpa, I have fond memories of my own Grandpa, the family used to stay on a caravan park near Penmaenmawr (North Wales Coast). We'd spend the day riding old fashioned DMU's (the ones where you can sit behind the driving cab and see the track ahead) along the North Wales Coast railway between Chester and Holyhead, we even travelled to Blaenau Ffestiniog before the new station shared with the Ffestiniog Railway was built. Happy Days. It's nice to know you enjoy watching these videos, I am very grateful to the drivers who allow me to attach a camera to their trains. I guess some of these videos remind your Grandpa about his rail journeys back in the days when trains were referred to as Southern Region, Western Region, Eastern Region, the LMS and the LNER. I bet he shares some interesting stories with you. Best wishes to you and your Grandpa. Tim 😊.
